The Church Street Mural, Pontypridd
The objective of the mural was to celebrate the rejuvenation of the valleys and the return of wildlife after generations of mining and industry had polluted the air and rivers. Today, herons can be spotted flying towards the old bridge to feed in the shadow of Ynysangharad Park and reports of salmon in the River Taff were also an inspiration to the project.
One of our leading members was able to raise the details of the project with the Pontypridd Market Company in order to find a suitable location within the town. The alcoves in the building in Church Street were ideal for such a mural. The theme for the mural, "The Valley Awakes" was decided at the meeting, and local actor, Dorien Thomas suggested the words.
Comments regarding the project.

'More to Borough than grot spots'
The Observer has quite rightly given attention to the grot spots which we find around us. Perhaps consideration should also be given to recognising the efforts of individuals and groups who have worked to improve the areas of our Borough. One example being, the two mosaic panels on the side of the old Co-op building in Church Street, Pontypridd. Who did this impressive work?
J Roberts, Whiterock Drive, Graigwen, Pontypridd.
