Pontypridd Rail Station began its life in 1840 as Newbridge Rail Station of the Taff Vale Railway and was renamed Pontypridd Rail Station in 1891. Due to the expansion of the coal industry in the South Wales Valleys, the station was extensively remodelled in the 19th and early 20th Century meet with the demand, eventually sporting the longest platform in the world for several years at a third of a mile (500m) long.

In recent years, the station has fallen into a serious state of disrepair. As a Grade 2 listed building, the site is classed as being of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve it. Passengers using Pontypridd Station are subjected to rotting canopy boards, peeling paint and rusting girders. Near misses have been witnessed by passengers, and it is felt that it is only a matter of time before an injury occurs due to the disintegrating fabric of the building. So far, the only recent investment at Pontypridd Station has been to set up a British Transport Police base at the station in November 2006. This addition has been welcomed by commuters, and it is felt that this should be the start of many improvements to restore the station. Recently, plans have been announced by the Welsh assembly that £30 million will be made available for expansion of the Valley Lines Network, including an additional platform at Pontypridd Station. We believe that before any extension of the station takes place, the safety and stability of the existing building should be ensured. |

We wrote to Arriva Trains Wales as the leaseholders of the station in April & May 2008 who informed us that they are not responsible for the structure of the building. On their advice, we wrote to Network Rail on July 4th 2008. A satisfactory response was finally received on Janury 9th 2009 after several attempts. Following our communication with Network Rail, we have learned that partial refurbishment of the canopy will take place in March 2009 due to the installation of ticket gates in Pontypridd Station. It is estimated that this work will cost up to £2.5million.

We have also been informed by Network Rail that Pontypridd Station is included in their National Station Improvement Plan and that funding for further restoration has been brought forward to the 2009/10 financial year. Work is expected to start in January 2010 for completion in July 2010.
